Aser MoltashyInstitution: Reynolds Community College

Candidacy: Speaker of the House

Bio: Born in Baghdad, Iraq, I was a war refugee who immigrated to the United States. Now I am a paralegal studies and social sciences double major. At Reynolds, I am a student leader; I am the president of the Student Government Association and the President of the award-winning Junto Philosophy Discussion Club. Last year, I was the only delegate from Reynolds at VGS. This year, however, I have brought VGS to my school so that my peers can enjoy the privileges of being a part of this program. I wasn't born a good leader, but over the past few years I have grown into an award-winning leader who has built a community around logic and argument.

Statement: At Reynolds, club officer meetings used to be long and cumbersome, and, frankly, unproductive. Learning from my mistakes, I immersed myself in Robert's Rules. This change has skyrocketed our efficiency. For the first time in years, the Student Government Association was able to get through a full agenda on time consistently and, under my leadership as the president and chair, became one of the most active SGAs Reynolds has had since COVID. In just a few weeks, the new strategies that I adapted quadrupled our following on Instagram, helping us reach more students than ever. Student events had excellent turnouts, and overall student engagement had increased. Robert's Rules wasn't the catalyst for this change, since it was used before my presidential term; it was the way we applied it. From one change, SGA has created a community; a new Reynolds tradition. This is the leadership that is fit for the Speaker of the House: leadership that can adapt. Leadership that focuses on efficiency. Leadership that Virginia deserves. That's my leadership.
